I am 20 years old. I’ve been on some form of birth control for more than 4 years now.
At 15, I first tried the Depo Provera birth control shot. The first 3 months (1 shot) I bled every single day, which I hated. I got 1 more shot of Depo, and for those 3 months I didn’t bleed at all. I also went from weighing 130 pounds to weighing 195+ pounds in this time (I did have an increased appetite but not enough to gain 65 pounds in 3 months). I decided to STOP Depo and never ever have that in my body again.
For the next 2 yrs (until age 17) I had NO PERIOD WHATSOEVER. After going to the doctor I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycycstic Ovary Syndrome) and prescribed Metformin (to control blood sugar levels and hopefully help me lose some weight) and Levora (birth control pills to help resume my period).
Levora wasn’t what I wanted in a pill- I am not even sure why anymore since it was a while ago- so I stopped taking it.

All in all, I have used Levora, Zovia, Seasonique, Yaz, "The Shot," "The Patch," and most recently, NuvaRing.

I really enjoyed NuvaRing for the first year- but just in the past month or 2 I have started to have brown spotting CONSTANTLY. Every single day, many times a day. I can’t tell you how many nice pairs of underwear have been RUINED from this brown discharge. It does NOT come out of my panties even after using Shout and washing them.

I am just SICK AND TIRED of all the different side effects EVERY SINGLE type of birth control gives me!
And yeah, I really would like to stay on birth control because I have (monogamous) sex regularly and do not want to get pregnant, plus I find condoms irritating.

My full list of symptoms:
-terrible menstrual cramps
-extreme weight gain
-hair thinning/loss
-development of facial hair
-increased appetite
-brown discharge
-irritability/depression/indifference
-acne

I realize a lot of these may not be caused by birth control alone but by the fact that I also have PCOS.

I’m just sick of going to the doctor and them not owning up to their mistakes- first them misdiagnosing me- telling me I didn’t have PCOS- then calling me 1 hour after my appointment to tell me in a quite insensitive way that THEY screwed up, the doctor had NO IDEA who I was when I went in for my appointment- and that I DID have PCOS after all. And I’m tired of them criticizing me and lecturing me on my weight- I KNOW I’M FAT! YOUR medicines did this to me! Don’t you think I’m doing everything I can to lose this weight? I have lost most of my faith in the medical system by now.

Any women out there have the same constant trouble with hormonal birth control options? What seems to work for you?
SARAH- wow, thanks a lot for nothing. I already stated I am in a monogamous relationship, I am not sleeping around, so maybe you should try to answer the question that I asked rather than trying to preach your beliefs onto others who obviously have already made up their own minds.

TONALIN CLA, conjugated linoleic acid… someone told me they are amazing at burning away fat especially in the abdominal area. Does anyone know anything about this???

I have been through it all and know what’s it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can’t be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I’ve worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes.

Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight.

First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can’t eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising…

This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it’s good for the heart.

However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It’s so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I’ve found a great addition to help any one out, it’s a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don’t get all crazy on me and say diet pills don’t work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn’t meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It’s an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at theweightlossplace dot com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it’s the best pill I’ve tried and I’ve tried cupboards full. Now this doesn’t mean you have to follow my foot steps but I’ve successfully lost roughly 70 pounds and keeping it off til this day.

Well good luck and remember what I said, Dedicate.

Hi everyone,

I’ve been trying to stick to a strict diet and also going to the gym whenever I can the last three months. I am a 5 foot 9, male and I am starting from the weight of 235 lbs with a BMI around 35, so i was very much obese.

I am now at 198 lbs (no longer obese, yay!) My waist has gone from a 42" to a 34" and I look and feel a lot healthier and happier.

My concern is, at gym when i went to measure the body fat percentage, there wasn’t a substantial drop. I was 26-27% before, and now i’m 23%. When i try to do the math, it looks like i am losing an equal amount of fat AND lean muscle mass! I wanted to know if having lean muscle loss like this (at the same rate as fat loss) is expected or if i’m doing something seriously wrong? Should I try to increase my protein intake ?

Please let me know your thoughts.

That’s a really tough question to answer without knowing more about your diet and your workout. It could be that you are doing a bit too much cardio. Excessive cardio while great for dropping the pounds will also convert lean muscle into energy. On any type of cut (meaning trying to reduce bodyfat) you will lose some muscle mass. Also if you are using calipers to measure your body fat be aware that they are notoriously inaccurate.

To be honest I worry very little about my body fat numbers, in fact I’ve never tried to cacluate them. I just look in the mirror, or take before and after pics. One now, one a few weeks from now. Its much easier to tell the difference that way.

If you want more information about good weightlifting and cardio routines I suggest checking out the forums at www.bodybuilding.com. They have lots of good info for both beginners and pros.

Don’t most Weight loss/ fat burner pills have the same ingredients? Are there any safe ones like Hydroxycut?

i wouldnt trust any of those.the safest way is diet and exercise alone..any pill that they say is "Natural" must pass through your liver..take vitamins and a well balanced diet and exercise and you wont need any diet pills…either that or take the diet pills and take a HUGE chance at liver failure.

I went to a website with all the classic diet pills with the real ephedra as I know there are many fake Ephedra Extracts in the market that have no ephedrine alkaloids. The alkaloids is what makes it work. Has anybody gone to that site at http://www.thatswholesale.com ?

For me Hydroxycut Hardcore.
