I just got a treadmill and it says for maximum fat loss I should have a target heart rate of 138, but for aerobic a target heart rate of 155. It leads me to think that a lower heart rate will make me lose rate (a lighter workout?)…does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

Michael Thurmond says something about slow and steady is the best way to burn fat, it’s in his books…he gets the pounds off too, he’s the guru in Extreme Makeover show.

The answer is simply yes. You burn more calories the higher your heart rate is. The higher your heart rate is from physical exercise the more energy it is taking to keep it there right? Now take the definition of a calorie. All a calorie is, is a measure of energy. Now if a calorie is energy and it takes more energy to keep your heart rate up, that means it takes more calories to keep your heart rate up. Hope this helps.
